What is SSL (Secure Sockets Layer)

SSL is a standard security technology for establishing an encrypted link between a server and a client, typically a web server (website), and an internet browser (e.g. IE, Chrome, Safari etc), though this can also be between a mail server and mail client (e.g. Outlook). The SSL mechanism allows the transmission of sensitive data such as credit card numbers, login credentials etc securely. Normally data sent between browsers and web servers occurs in plain text, which renders the transmission open to interception and abuse.

SSL itself is a security protocol that describes an algorithm. The algorithm determines the variables of the encryption for both the link and the data transmitted.
